The star here is definitely the chicken thighs themselves, which offer rich taste and juiciness. With just a few pantry staples, you can whip up a meal that’s both satisfying and delicious.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Thighs

Air Fryer Chicken Thighs

Making Air Fryer Chicken Thighs is a straightforward process that yields delicious results. With just a few simple steps, you’ll have a crispy, flavorful meal that’s sure to impress. Let’s get started!

  1. Grab some chicken thighs and a sharp pair of kitchen shears. Begin by blotting the chicken dry with a paper towel. This step is crucial for achieving crispy skin.

  2. If the thigh bone isn’t exposed, use the shears to snip down to expose it. Start at one end and carefully cut out the bone, ensuring you don’t cut through the meat. Trim as close to the bone as possible, working your way around the joint.

  3. Once you’ve removed the bone, repeat this process for the remaining thighs. Don’t forget to save the bones for homemade bone broth!

  4. Next, flatten each thigh using a meat pounder. This ensures even cooking, resulting in perfectly tender meat.

  5. Sprinkle Diamond Crystal kosher salt generously on both sides of the chicken thighs. If you’re feeling adventurous, add a sprinkle of Magic Mushroom Powder on the meat side for an added flavor kick, but keep the skin side plain to avoid burning.

  6. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for about 15 to 18 minutes, based on the size of your thighs. This helps to achieve that perfect crispiness.

  7. Once the air fryer is hot, carefully arrange the chicken thighs in a single layer, skin side up, in the basket. If your air fryer lacks a non-stick coating, spray the basket with avocado cooking spray to prevent sticking.

  8. You can fit up to five thighs without leaving space in between, as they will shrink while cooking. Ensure they are touching but not overlapping.

  9. The Air Fryer Chicken Thighs are ready when the skin is crispy and the meat reaches an internal temperature of at least 165°F. Use a meat thermometer to check this.

  10. If you’re making a second batch, pour out the rendered fat before cooking to reduce smoke.

Things Worth Knowing

  • Temperature Check: Always use a meat thermometer to ensure your chicken reaches at least 165°F. This guarantees safe and delicious results.
  • Patience is Key: Letting the chicken rest after cooking allows the juices to redistribute, enhancing flavor and tenderness.
  • Batch Cooking: If you’re cooking multiple batches, make sure to clean out any excess fat between batches to keep the air fryer from smoking.
  • Skin Side Up: Always place your chicken thighs skin side up in the air fryer for the crispiest result.

FAQ

To ensure your chicken thighs are crispy, start by blotting them dry with a paper towel before seasoning. The less moisture on the skin, the better it will crisp up in the air fryer. Additionally, always place the thighs skin side up in the air fryer for the best results. Finally, make sure your air fryer is preheated to the right temperature before cooking, and don’t overcrowd the basket. This allows hot air to circulate freely, resulting in perfectly crisp skin.

Yes, you can absolutely use boneless chicken thighs! However, keep in mind that the cooking time may vary since they will cook faster than bone-in thighs. Just be sure to monitor the internal temperature, ensuring it reaches at least 165°F for safe consumption. Boneless thighs may not have as much flavor from the bones, but they will still yield juicy results if cooked correctly.

The beauty of Air Fryer Chicken Thighs is their versatility. They pair wonderfully with a variety of dishes. Some great options include mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh garden salad. You can also serve them over rice or with a side of pasta. Whatever you choose, be sure to balance your meal with some greens for a wholesome dining experience.

To store any leftover Air Fryer Chicken Thighs, place them in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, simply pop them back into the air fryer for a few minutes, which will help restore their crispiness. If you want to keep them longer, consider freezing them. Make sure they’re fully cooled, then wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and foil before placing them in the freezer.

Absolutely! One of the best things about making Air Fryer Chicken Thighs is the opportunity to customize the flavors. Feel free to experiment with different seasoning blends, marinades, or herbs. You can use garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, or even a bit of cayenne for heat. Just remember to season the skin with salt to ensure it crisps up beautifully while cooking.

  1. Grab some chicken thighs and a sharp pair of kitchen shears. Blot the chicken dry with a paper towel. If the thigh bone isn’t exposed, use the shears to snip down to expose it. Then, starting at one end, carefully cut out the bone, making sure you don’t cut through the meat.

  3. Flatten the chicken with a meat pounder to ensure uniform cooking.
  4. Sprinkle Diamond Crystal kosher salt on both sides of the chicken thighs. If you want to spice things up, you can sprinkle your favorite seasoning salt (e.g. Magic Mushroom Powder) on the meat side—but avoid sprinkling anything but salt on the skin side. (I don’t recommend putting anything besides salt on the skin because the spices can burn.)
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 15 to 18 minutes, depending on the size of the thighs.
  6. When the air fryer is hot, carefully arrange the chicken thighs in a single layer, skin side up, in the the air fryer basket. (If your air fryer does not have a non-stick coating, spray avocado cooking spray before you place the chicken thighs in a single layer, skin side up, in the the air fryer basket.) You can actually smoosh up to five chicken thighs in a single layer in most 6-quart air fryer baskets without leaving any space in between them. They’ll turn out fine—the pieces will shrink as they cook.
  7. The Cracklin’ Chicken is ready when the skin is crispy and the meat is thoroughly cooked (at least 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh using a meat thermometer). If you’re making another batch, pour out the rendered fat before cooking another batch to reduce the amount of smoke.

Notes

  • Flatten the deboned chicken thighs evenly with a meat pounder to ensure even cooking.
  • Only season the skin with salt so it will crisp up golden brown without burning! If you want to use a seasoning blend, only season the meat side.
  • No need to add oil! I know many of you are tempted to brush the skin with olive oil or avocado oil, but the skin comes out crispier WITHOUT it.
  • Lay the chicken thighs in a single layer in the air fryer. The thighs can touch each other on the side, but there should be no overlap—we’re aiming for 100% crispy skin!
  • Spice things up by seasoning the meat side with one of my amazing Nom Nom Paleo Spice blends! You can make them yourself or buy the blends on Amazon.
