Ingredients

  • 1/2 French baguette French baguette
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 ounces goat cheese
  • 1 pint fresh figs
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • salt
  • pepper

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Chef's Knife

Method

  1. Start by preheating your oven to a broil setting. As the oven heats up, take your fresh French baguette and slice it into half-inch thick pieces. The thickness is crucial; you want them to be sturdy enough to hold all the toppings yet thin enough to crisp up nicely.
  2. Once you have sliced the baguette, place the slices on a baking sheet. Brush each piece generously with olive oil. The oil will help the bread develop a golden crust as it toasts. Be sure to coat the edges too!
  3. Now, sprinkle a pinch of salt and freshly cracked pepper over the bread slices. This seasoning will elevate the flavor of the crostini, ensuring they are savory and delicious.
  4. Slide the baking sheet into the oven under the broiler for about 5 minutes. Keep a close eye on them! You want them to be just starting to toast, turning a lovely golden brown while still maintaining a soft inside.
  5. Once toasted, carefully remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for a moment. Spread a generous amount of goat cheese onto each slice. Make sure to cover the surface well; the creamy texture will be the foundation for your toppings.
  6. Next, take your fresh figs and slice them thinly. Arrange a few slices on top of the goat cheese on each crostini. The sweetness of the figs beautifully contrasts with the tangy cheese.
  7. Drizzle a teaspoon of honey over the figs on each crostini. The honey will add an extra layer of sweetness that ties all the flavors together.
  8. For the final touch, sprinkle a little more fresh cracked pepper on top. It adds just the right hint of spice to balance the sweetness and richness.
  9. Place the crostini back under the broiler for another 2 to 3 minutes. Watch closely as the honey begins to bubble and the edges of the bread start to brown. You want them to be warm and inviting, but not burnt!
  10. Finally, remove the crostini from the oven and serve immediately. They are best enjoyed warm, right out of the oven, when the bread is crispy, and the cheese is gooey. Enjoy your Fig and Goat Cheese Crostini with good company!
