Ingredients

  • 1 Slow cooker
  • to taste Seasoning salt
  • 1 1 trimmed tri-tip
  • 1 cup 1 cup water, beef, or chicken broth
  • 5 5 french rolls sliced open
  • 5 tablespoons 5 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 1/4 cup 1 1/4 cup (5 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup barbecue sauce

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven
  • Slow Cooker
  • Chef's Knife

Method

  1. Start by sprinkling seasoning salt evenly over the entire surface of the tri-tip. This adds essential flavor to the meat and ensures it's well-seasoned throughout. Be generous, but don’t overdo it!
  2. Next, place the seasoned tri-tip into the slow cooker along with your choice of water or broth. This liquid will create a steamy environment that helps cook the meat to perfection.
  3. Set the slow cooker to high and let the meat cook for approximately three to four hours, or if you prefer, set it to low for about six to eight hours. The tri-tip is done when it becomes tender enough to be easily pulled apart with a fork.
  4. Once cooked, take two forks and shred the tri-tip directly in the slow cooker. This will help mix the meat with the flavorful juices, making it even more moist and tasty.
  5. Preheat your oven to 400°F. This step is crucial for achieving a crispy bread texture later on.
  6. Spread a layer of mayonnaise over the inside of each french roll. This not only adds flavor but also helps prevent the bread from becoming soggy.
  7. Fill each roll generously with the shredded tri-tip and top it with shredded cheddar cheese. Don’t skimp on the cheese; the gooeyness adds another layer of deliciousness!
  8. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and put them in the oven. Bake for about five to six minutes until the bread is toasted and the cheese is bubbly. Keep an eye on them to avoid burning!
  9. Finally, drizzle barbecue sauce over the sandwiches just before serving. This adds a tangy flavor that complements the savory meat beautifully.
  10. Serve your Slow Cooker Tri Tip Sandwiches warm and enjoy the flavors and textures in each bite!

Notes

  • If you don't have seasoning salt: mix together 2 teaspoons each of salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • If you buy an untrimmed tri-tip: just cut off as much of the layer of fat as you can before adding the seasoning and cooking.
